Wherever You Look

Hummingbirds winging northward
Over silent and sickened cities
Putting out feeders in Kansas
Every morning its own watch party

Hovering eagles over the county lake
Outside on the trails only birdsong
Putting in his line a single fisherman
Everything hanging on chicken liver

Hurrying to grocery store in predawn
Opting for staples that will last
Putting luxuries aside to buy diapers
Each item in the bag now a gift

Hoping still for some Easter joy
Our churches shuttered like tombs
Perhaps the resurrection message
Echoing even stronger in strong hearts.
